What is a Root Canal?

Smiling Made Easier: Experience the Dental Difference with Us!

A root canal is a dental procedure designed to treat infections or damage within a tooth’s pulp. The pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, it can cause severe tooth pain and sensitivity. Root canal therapy involves removing the infected or damaged pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and sealing it to prevent further infection.

Symptoms You May Need a Root Canal:

Some common symptoms that may indicate you need a root canal include:

  • Severe tooth pain, especially when biting or chewing
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums surrounding the affected tooth
  • Discoloration or darkening of the tooth
  • A pimple-like bump on the gums near the affected tooth

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, scheduling an appointment with Dr. Rob as soon as possible is vital for an evaluation.

What to Expect When Getting a Root Canal

At Lake Hickory Dental, we know root canal therapy can be intimidating for some patients. That’s why we strive to make the process as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

  1. Consultation: During your initial consultation, Dr. Rob will examine your tooth and take dental X-rays to assess the extent of the infection or damage.
  2. Treatment Planning: If we recommend root canal therapy, Dr. Rob will explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions you may have. Together, we will discuss your treatment options and develop a personalized plan tailored to your needs.
  3. Anesthesia: Before beginning the procedure, Dr. Rob will administer local anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth, ensuring your comfort throughout the root canal.
  4. Accessing the Pulp: Dr. Rob will create a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.
  5. Removing the Pulp: Using specialized instruments, Dr. Rob will carefully remove the infected or damaged pulp from the inside of the tooth.
  6. Cleaning and Shaping: We will thoroughly clear and shape the root canals to remove any remaining debris and bacteria.
  7. Filling and Sealing: Once we clean the root canals, we will fill them with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed to prevent recontamination.
  8. Restoration: In most cases, a dental crown will be placed over the treated tooth to restore its strength, function, and appearance.
  9. Follow-Up Care: After your root canal therapy, we will provide instructions for post-operative care and schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your progress. Most patients experience significant relief from pain and discomfort following root canal treatment and can resume normal activities shortly thereafter.
